Cirque Du Soleil presents… Quidam at Prospera Place in Kelowna, BC on August 22, 2012.
Quidam being my sixth opportunity to witness one of Cirque Du Soleil’s masterpiece’s, I like to think I’ve become quite a self-proclaimed Cirque snob.
With this show being new to most, Quidam debuted back in 1996 in Montreal, however since then has converted to an upgraded touring show. Quidam touched down in Kelowna, BC for a 5 day showing, and I was given the opportunity to check it out on opening night.
As each Cirque show varies, they tend to all have the same core components, being: the art of gymnastics (taken to a whole new level), comic relief, as well a deep story within each show. Quidam included the same components, but managed to have a different feel to the show. Quidam offered what seemed to be a dark, but very intense feel; one that kept you on your feet, and biting your nails.
The story revolves around main character, Zoe, who seems to be of minimal interest to her parents which leads Zoe into a world of her own. That world being; Quidam. In an effort to escape her parents neglect, Zoe explores the oh so mysterious Quidam which consists of many mesmerizing acts (which include suspended ropes, hoops, monstrous human strength, and the jaw-dropping acrobatics), as well as multiple comic relief pieces in between acts. Throughout the show, multiple attendees were brought up upon stage to their surprise, which definitely had positively benefit such acts.
Overall Quidam was an astounding example of what Cirque Du Soleil has to display, to those first time attendees. As it is a much more intense Cirque offering, Quidam may not appeal to young families as much as the other productions; as it displays less of the Cirque ‘Wow-Factor’ and more moments for the intellectual appreciation towards the performers and what they can do.
