Primus returned to Las Vegas for a 3 night stand at the new venue in town, The Brooklyn Bowl, beginning May 1, 2014.
Primus, a band who truly has a sound all their own, has been around for 3 decades of funky rock/metal/however you want to describe it FUN. The trio of Les Claypool, with Guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, and drummer,Tim “Herb” Alexander, brought the party to Las Vegas for three consecutive nights at the Brooklyn Bowl and I was fortunate to be able to watch the first night, then go back to photograph the second night.
Les Claypool is genius magic. His serious mastery of the bass makes me want to stand there staring at his fingers with my jaw on the floor in awe, especially when he’s performing the vocals while laying down the wildest bass lines ever played. How does his mind work in so many directions at the same time? Genius-Magic, that’s how! His quirky, Mad Scientist of Music persona, and his funky bass lines won’t allow me or anyone else to stand still though, you have to groove with Les Claypool, you can’t be still!
Les had a good time with the crowd, giving us some details on some of the bowling going on at the lanes beside the stage, and inviting a fan who was dancing in the crowd with a Les Claypool puppet to a bowling game after the show. I hope that happened! He did bring the fan and the puppet onstage for the encore “Here Come the Bastards” at the end of the night.
The Brooklyn Bowl, is located at The Linq on the Las Vegas Strip at the foot of the world’s largest Observation wheel and is host not only to the music venue but a fantastic restaurant and the nicest bowling alley I’ve ever seen. You can see the stage from the restaurant and the bowling alley so if you get hungry or want to bowl a game with your friends you can multitask and not miss any of the action onstage.
