Hurricane?? That’s not going to stop Sammy Hagar from celebrating his birthday in style!

Even though the locale may have changed, the party remained, as the Red Rocker and several thousand Redheads filled the new Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLV) for a night of mas tequila and rock and roll to celebrate Hagar’s 67th.  Sponsored by the D Hotel and emcee’d by the owner Derek Stevens, the show kicked off with Michigan bred band Kaleido, brought in by the D for the night and for more shows on Fremont street for the weekend.

Kaleido mixed a pounding hard rock band and Gwen Stefani-styled vocals from an amazing frontwoman who easily commanded the stage in front of thousands of new admirers. The punk haired vocalist was a ball of energy on stage and was a great act to open the show and pump up the crowd for the night to come.

Sammy Hagar kicked off his headlining set with his band The Circle (Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, Vic Johnson) and the set list ran the gamut of Sammy’s solo best, Montrose faves, Van Hagar hits, Led Zeppelin classics and some “Heavy Metal” noise! The birthday bash was originally scheduled for Cabo, but when weather called for a cancellation the band AND fans rerouted planes, trains and automobiles to get to the new show in Vegas. Fans from all over the globe were spotted in the crowd with banners, posters, license plates and t-shirts, the Red Rocker fans are serious about their shows. The new DLV outdoor venue was packed and everyone was singing and dancing in the crowd for the length of the show.

Hagar was joined by surprise guest Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger for an extended “Levee Breaks” with Bonham pounding out the Zeppelin backbeat, and The Circle Finished out their part of the night with “Best of Both Worlds”. Quickly band members changed out for the next Hagar set from Chickenfoot, with Joe Satriani, Michael Antony and Chili Peppers Chad Smith (or Will Farrell ?? we weren’t completely positive lol). Satriani came out sans red wig and hat, at this point Hagar et al was cutting up and having a ball, and the ‘party’ part of the night was definitely in progress. The band played through a few Chickenfoot numbers, celebrated center stage with Sammy and family and a red guitar shaped birthday cake presented by the D with a big number 67 (the cake got mainly smashed on a few faces instead of eaten) before the night ended with all the performers back on stage (Chad Smith on Guitar this time while Bonham pulled drum duties) for a impressive and fun finale of Zep’s “Rock n Roll”.

Hagar expressed a big thanks to all the fans that changed travel plans and headed to Vegas after the cancelled Cabo shows, and vowed they would still have shows in Cabo when things are back up and running to raise money for the people who suffered damage and tragedy in the wake of the hurricane Odile.
