Growing up, I can honestly admit I went through a lengthy hip-hop and rap phase. Starting with the first white superstar rapper, Eminem, we were introduced to D12 in 1999 with their debut release, Devil’s Night. An interesting fact about how the group came about their name; D12 short for Dirty Dozen. Originally however, the group only consisted of 6 members. Solution: Alter Ego’s. Proof chose Dirty Hairy, Bizarre became Peter S. Bizzare, Kuniva became Rondell Beene, Kon Artis became Mr Porter, Bugz became Robert Beck, and Eminem became Slim Shady. Eminem split off to pursue a solo career after meeting Dr Dre. In April 2011, D12 announces the return of Fuzz Scoota.
After the death of member Bugz, Eminem rejoined the group and helped fulfill the groups album obligations. Their release of their debut album Devil’s Night featured chart topping tracks Purple Pills, and Fight Music.
I remember listening to those tracks very very loud in my car stereos with friends, touring around the old Ottawa suburbs. Good times they were! The tour stop in Kelowna was great! They got held up at customs a little bit longer then anticipated, and showed up on stage late, but still managed to throw down their show. One by one, the members that toured, first Swifty, then Bizarre, then Kuniva, and even non-member, Maestro came out. They banged out all their big tracks, and the crowd loved it. The venue is great as usual, (perhaps this is biased, as it’s my residence local!) -but really, Sapphire Nite Club is an amazing venue with the ability to cater to any crowd, proven time over. The arena stage setup gave fans the experience to see D12 up close and personal, as they shook hands, and bumped fists throughout the performance. It was great to feel like these artists know their fans are important to them, and that they truly love what they do.
