Free Press Summer Fest presents… Weezer in Houston, TX.
June 5th, 2011
Weezer put the exclamation point on Houston’s Free Press Summer Fest to cap off the third annual weekend music festival. Brutal temperatures kept many of Saturday’s attendees home on Sunday, but by 8pm the hillside in front of the Main Stage was at its peak. Pre-festival snarking about Weezer’s indie cred and fit as headliner into the festival lineup clearly had not fazed a crowd heavily skewed to 20-somethings.
A late-afternoon shower had rejuvenated everyone and Weezer responded in kind. While the staging did not allow Rivers to jump down to barrier level as he had at Voodoo Experience last October, Rivers was no less intent in connecting and ensuring that choral support was ready to go. Opener “Undone - The Sweater Song” was a hint of the slow-fused, building set list, however the crowd eagerly joined in. Crowd energy seemed to peak with “Hashpipe” and several of Houston’s finest visibly bobbing their heads in rhythm. The hits were well represented across nearly two hours, with only “Beverly Hills” and “My Name Is Jonas” missing.
Encore finale “Buddy Holly” became an extended jam/instrumental as fireworks launched across the bayou to close out the concert and festival. Judging by Twitter comments, even the naysayers had to acknowledge Weezer delivered.
