Filter… at the City National Grove of Anaheim on August 2, 2011

On Tuesday August 2, rock fans came out to City National Grove of Anaheim to see the Alternative Revolt Magazine & Kush Kills Clothing presents: Under the Skin of Angels USA Tour featuring Filter, Saliva, Anew Revolution, and Heart-Set Self Destruct. The name of the tour come from a mixing of words, from the titles of the albums that Filter and Saliva have been touring in support of (The Trouble with Angels, and Under Your Skin). On that particular weekday, the turnout was something of a marvel as Filter took to the stage. I speculated that a lot of the adults in attendance with drink in hand, had to work the next morning. Hearing them trade stories, it was testament that loyal fans will make the effort to see their favorite bands. As anticipation began to build, the previous loosely-spaced crowd moved up closer to the barriers. Before the set began, it was announced that a live recording was being made, and that patrons would be able to purchase the live album after the show. . .
Fans cheered loudly as members of Filter, Richard Patrick (lead vocals/guitar), Mika Fineo (drums), Rob Patterson (guitar), and Phil Buckman (bass) took to the stage. An energetic frontman, Patrick bounced about the stage as he sang and and delivered his signature screams. Not ones to stand still for long, Patterson and Buckman bobbed and prowled the stage. Coupled with Fineo’s tireless thrashing on the kit, Filter made it a night to remember. The band played titles that spanned their extensive catalog dating back to the 90s to their latest effort, which was released last year. The set also included ”Trip Like I Do” (a past collaboration with The Crystal Method), and an electrifed cover of ZZ Top’s “Gimme All Your Lovin’”. Patrick played to the crowd well, often coming down from the stage to get closer to the outreached arms of the crowd up front. Some got a good feel for the metal barriers as a mosh pit broke out on the heavier-sounding numbers. People were bumped from behind and pushed forth like a stack of dominoes. That was part of the fun in being amongst the audience members who were bobbing, or dancing along to the music. During a quiet moment, Patrick quipped that they were a “full service rock n roll band” as he picked up a fan’s camera. While it was in recording mode, the frontman panned it over the audience, walked it over to Buckman’s backside, then over to stage right for a close up of Patterson’s face while providing playful commentary. I’m sure the video clip is on Youtube by now. . . The band closed off the set with the classic “Hey Man, Nice Shot”. The boisterous off-key singing of the crowd was encouraged even more as Patrick hovered over and held his mic out. After the set slowed to an end, the die hard fans hung around, calling for more. It was evident of the following that Filter has amassed over the years. As patrons made their way towards the exit, chanting was heard emanating from the building: “Fil-ter! Fil-ter! Fil-ter! . .”
Tour dates continue through the month of August with dates to me announced (http://www.altrevolt.com/usatour/dates.html). Moshing is encouraged at your own risk.

Fun show indeed. Had gone to this for a couple of the opening bands but Filter surprised me. Have never been a fan of the music really but after seeing them live it changed my opinion. The energy and passion that they pour out to their fans was amazing.
