Jonesy’s Jukebox and KROQ presents . . . VOLBEAT at the House of Blues, Anaheim, California, September 3, 2011
Danish metal band, Volbeat, closed out their summer tour with a two night stand at the Anaheim House of Blues. Their latest album Beyond Hell/Above Heaven has been receiving a lot of praise that is well deserved. These Danes are a straight up bad ass metal band and while I’ve been enjoying their latest album in high rotation on my iPod, their live show got them promoted to my top five favorite bands.
Their heavy metal with a twist of Johnny Cash comes across even better live than on the recordings. The show was sold out, shoulder to shoulder from the stage to the back wall and every person there was into it. During their encore they brought a lot of the front row up on stage with them while they performed a their song “Thanks”, a love song to their friends, fans, all the people who support them doing what they love. Their set was filled with nods to their influences. They busted out a little big of S.O.D., Mercyful Fate, and even closed out the night with some of Slayer’s Reign in Blood.
This was one of those shows that felt like a party, maybe because the band was having so much fun it seemed like they were playing to a hometown crowd. They were a long way from Denmark, but I’m sure they felt at home Saturday night.
