The Crown Theatre at The Rio Hotel and Casino presents… Texas Hippie Coalition on Sept 12, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Texas Hippie brought their brand of outlaw metal all the way from Texas to Laaaaaas Vegas! Texas Hippie Coalition is a southern metal act fronted by Big Dad Rich, a big, BIG burly man with a smooth drawl that was almost shockingly thick when he addressed the small but energetic crowd for the weekly CrownMonday Night Rocks series. Big Dad talked a big talk about his love of beer, broads, bud, and the US of A, and backed it up with growling vocals and screaming choruses as the band maneuvered through picks from the latest release Rollin’. Texas Hippie then rolled through “Jesus Freak”, “Back from Hell” and title track, showing off the guitar prowess of Randy Cooper and Wes Wallace, and the bass heavy stylings of John Exall holding down the bottom end with Tim Braun on drums.
Texas Hippie Coalition have their sound rooted in old school southern metal the likes of Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet and ZZ Top, with a mix of newer modern texas-core influences like Pantera and Hellyeah throwing in some speed. Nicknamed “red dirt metal”, the bands’ single “Pissed Off and Mad About It” became a heavy rotation fave, and fans at the Crown show yelled “are ya pissed off?” whenever Big Dad slowed things down with a little conversation and storytelling throughout the mix. The single pushed the cd up the CMJ Hard Rock Chart to the top 10, generating new fans as it gained airplay last year across the country. The band didn’t disappoint as they delivered “Pissed Off” to a rowdy response before calling it a night.
Texas Hippie Coalition has scheduled dates across the country through October (with a choice few with Black Label Society). Big Dad told the crowd the Coalition would also be out on the road with Kill Devil Hill later this year, another Texas based hardcore-meets-Jack Daniels band from Texas featuring Pantera’s Rex Brown and drum legend Vinny Appice. Should make one hell of a southern fried combo.
