Honeyhoney, who is currently touring across the US on support of their new album, managed to take time out of their day to catch up with myself, John Delaney, the Head Editor of MusicTourReviews and Suzanne and I discussed bands past, present, and future, focusing mainly around their tour right now!
John Delaney: Hi Suzanne, It’s great to have you here talking to us, as your big tour with Joshua James is just to become underway. So, in saying that, how did your first couple of shows go so far?
Suzanne: Well, thank you, it’s great to be talking here with you, the shows have been good, we’ve had a little bit of trouble, as we’ve had some vehicle trouble along the way, and we blew two tires within an hour, and needed to get towed to Albuquerque, so once we got towed, we literally had to run on stage. But we’ve only 3 shows so far.
John Delaney: So you’ve got tons and tons of shows to go, all before the middles of November, do you have any stops that you’re looking forward to the most?
Suzanne: Well you know, definitely, we’ve got those towns where we’ve got a lot of friends and family, and New York is always great, Cleveland, and Denver are lots of fun, and L.A. of course!
John Delaney: Now you are touring with Joshua James as a co-headliner, what can you say about him?
Suzanne: He’s really fantastic, I’m a big fan of his songs and just his musicianship in general. He’s a really cool dude, really eccentric and informative as far as like, you know, like he grows his own vegetables at all times with him, like he grows them in the van, so he is kind of living off his own stock here, it is pretty cool.
John Delaney: That’s definitely fantastic. Would you guys say your music tastes are pretty similar?
Suzanne: Yeah, well, you know, between the three of us, I think we’ve a got a great little outfit. You know as far as the nucleus that we are all sort of orbiting around, it’s definitely folk music, and a little bit of blues/blue-grass fit.
John Delaney: Now listening to you and Ben’s music, you were just saying folk and blues, but I had a hard time trying to distinguish what genre would your music fall under. Would you say it would be folk or blues or..?
Suzanne: We have a hard time defining our genre as well, we try to revolve around country, blues, folk, a little rock, sometimes jazz, whatever we are really feeling.
John Delaney: Would you say there is a song that would define you as a band today?
Suzanne: Oh boy, I would say all of them really, they all make up equivalent statuses of ourselves, but if I had to pick one, theres this song that we play called, Come On Home, it was the second song Ben and I wrote together. It defined a bit of our eccentric side, our rock out, jam band side, a little bit of country. But even that, it only defines one dimension, so that’s a tough question to answer.
John Delaney: Yeah definitely. Now what is your personal favorite song you guys have done so far?
Suzanne: Oh god, you are asking me some of the hardest questions! I don’t have a favorite, I really don’t. Well one of my favorites to play live, is this song called ‘Back To You’, that is not recorded because, we sort of there is some instrumentation that every time we play it, I am trying to try different things, and it’s that once song that I’m comfortable not doing the same thing every time. It just kind of comes to me, we’ve been playing it for a while. I think for now, it’s my favorite one to play live, I can’t speak for Ben on that one.
I just picked up on your accent, are you Irish?
John Delaney: I am actually Canadian, well I guess I am part Irish, but I am currently up here in Canada!
Suzanne: That is awesome! Sorry to get you de-railed here!
John Delaney: Oh no worries! Well, enough about the present, where do you hope to be in lets say, 5 or 10 years?
Suzanne: We are hoping to be closer to a larger platform, a few successful records that can take us internationally, and to a larger area. A little bit of financial comfort would be nice, and I’d like to do a solo record or two, I believe Ben would like to do the same thing. I’d really like to do a big movie or two, I do a little bit of acting as well. And I know that sounds so lame, I know everyone says that.
John Delaney: No that sounds good, that is the dream ideally.
Suzanne: Yeah it’s something I did for a while, I did it a couple years back and I loved it, and when I was pursuing both that and music, I had to kind of pick one, so you know. I think Ben wants to produce in the next 5 to 10 years.
John Delaney: Would you ever thing about doing a hybrid between the two, like a musical, or write songs for a movie?
Suzanne: Yeah, I mean I love writing songs for other people, do a Honeyhoney song for them, yeah that would be cool.
John Delaney: Is there any artists you would like to work with in the future?
Suzanne: Yes, I would like to work with Jack White.
John Delaney: Is there any reason in particular?
Suzanne: I think he is very attractive personality. He is a cheeky dude to me, and he is just so funny. And there’s so many others, I want to throw out there, maybe even Justin Timberlake, I mean why the hell not?
John Delaney: Exactly, I mean everyone would love to work with Justin Timberlake! Do you feel like those artists, like Jack White have inspired your work that you have done now?
Suzanne: Sometimes yeah, some of the tunes Ben and I are writing these days, we actually write a lot of tunes for our third record, and they’re a little bigger, a little more rock and roll sometimes, a little more wired, more instruments, that kind of increase in dynamics.
John Delaney: Now you’re packed for the next couple of months with the tour, should we be expecting new music to be created after that?
Suzanne: Oh hell yeah, one of our new records is coming our October 24, it’s actually available for pre-sale right now, on our website, which includes an instant digital download which you can put on your itunes directly, and then in the mail you will get our physical record in the mail as well in October or November.
John Delaney: And will this album be available on itunes in October once it is released?
Suzanne: Yes sir! We’ll also be releasing it on vinyl.
John Delaney: Wow that would be great to add to a collection, well fair enough on that note I should probably let you go, you have a big show tonight in Dallas, we will be catching up with you later on in the tour covering a few shows throughout!
Suzanne: Thanks John, that is really helpful!
John Delaney: Thank you, I hope you and Ben have a great rest of your tour!
