Underoath

The Union Events presents…Underoath with special guests… Comeback Kid, The Chariot, and This Is Hell, at the Garrick Theatre in Winnipeg, MB on October 3, 2011.

Starting off the night of metal-core was Long Island, New York natives This Is Hell. They started off their set to an empty theatre, that quickly started to fill up as their set progressed. Playing quite a few new songs, they had an energetic performance, with a guitar player who looked like he had a rubber neck with his head-banging.

Up next was The Chariot. Now I don’t know what to say about these guys other then that they are crazy. I have never seen such an insane band perform live. Jumping, and running all over the place, these guys are throwing guitars on the ground, and mic stands in the air. The bassist of The Chariot stage dove into a crowd that dispersed as he did so, in result of him land straight on the floor of the theatre. Seconds later he ran back up stage, and jokingly complained “Some fans you guys are”. All in all, for these guys I don’t know what else to say, they put on a good show I guess?

Official head openers of the tour, Comeback Kid call the city of Winnipeg home. Rocking their own versions of Jets apparel, they had the crowd pumped. At this time the theatre was full, and mosh pits were in full affect. They complained about the barricade being up, and the lack of stage divers, making the crowd extra rowdy. Comeback Kid well prepared the crowd for Underoath, and it wasn’t long before Underoath was prepared for them.

Coming onto the stage in pitch black, lead singer Spencer Chamberlain full out boasted his vocals. Now about 6 years ago, I was a pretty big fan of Underoath, knowing every lyric off of the They’re Only Chasing Safely record, I was pretty excited going into the show. Not to sure if they had released anything in the present, I was interested to see how many songs they would play of their older stuff. It seems they went about 50/50. As with most of the fans there, many sang the lyrical parts of the songs, with some key songs being It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door, and Writing On The Walls. About halfway through the set, lead singer Spencer got hit straight in the head with what looked like a plastic cup filled with beer. In result, Spencer went down on his knees, holding his head, and got up and threw a water bottle into the crowd. He smashed a micro-phone stand into the ground, snapping it in half, and yelled out to the crowd “Who Was It”. He then said, “It’s been a while since we’ve had that 1 idiot in the crowd, but I still love everyone else”. Continuing right back into their set like it never happened, all was well, and the fans were ecstatic.

Underoath ended with their encore as the song that made them who they are today; ‘A Boy Brushed Red Living In Black And White’. Fans left after the encore, parents picking them up, some driving home, some taking the bus, and a few in ambulances. It seemed nothing out of the norm for a metal-core show. Overall, a successful night for fans of Underoath, as well as for the band themselves.
