The Dead Throne Tour presents… The Devil Wears Prada with For Today, Enter Shikari, and Whitechapel at the Garrick Centre in Winnipeg, MB on November 8, 2011.
As hardcore teens entered the Garrick Centre last Tuesday, American Christian metal-core band, hailing from Ohio took the stage. For Today, who was playing 30 minute set, was probably the tamest of the night, pleased some fans who out of all the bands, wore their shirts to the show. The moshing didn’t start until about the 2nd last song, in which the band followed and ended with ‘Devestated’ where a circe mosh-pit was formed.
Following For Today was British post-hardcore band, Enter Shikari. These guys are nuts, simple as that. The music they play, wouldn’t be considered as hardcore, or even post-hardcore in my opinion. I also wouldn’t think about considering rap or hip/hop, or definitely not just dubstep. However, I would say it’s a mix of those 3! Hardcore/rap/dubsteppy-electronic type of music. It’s bizarre, and definitely interesting. But don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed them, actually probably my favourite of the night. The band was climbing up speakers, and giving shoulder rides to another, while dancing in a non-uniform way. Making sure to play their latest single ‘Sssnakepit’, the crowd danced and moshed hard to that one.
Up next, Whitechapel. Whitechapel is a hardcore deathcore band straight from Tennessee. Singing about death, gore, and criminal activities; these guys are rocking hard. Playing in mere darkness, and opening up with ‘Breeding Violence’, they played a nonstop energetic set that went on for 45 minutes leaving blood, sweat and tears on the stage.
Finally up next was the band most were waiting for… The Devil Wears Prada. The Devil Wears Prada, who have to be the most popular modern metalcore band there is took the stage for a packed Garrick Centre. Opening up with their single ‘Dead Throne’ (also the name of the tour itself, as well as their latest CD), dark lighting mixed with vibrant flashes of white flooded the stage.
With a wave of people crowd surfing their way to the stage, they kept security busy also with the moshing. An intense concert and set ended up with a 2 song encore which started off with ‘Chicago’.
Overall, The Devil Wears Prada, Whitechapel, Enter Shikari, and For Today ended off the night with pleased, sweaty, and bloody, fans most of whom had the time of their life. With a lineup who’s genre says it all about their music (well… except for Enter Shikari, I’m still undecided on their genre), these hardcore bands went hard.
