The Palms Hotel Casino presents Puscifer’s “Conditions of My Parole” Tour at The Pearl, December 10, 2011 Las Vegas, Nevada
Puscifer, the irreverantly comedic and musically mesmerizing project created by Maynard James Keenan, ended their 2011 “Conditions of My Parole” tour in Las Vegas this past Sunday night. I last saw Puscifer in February, 2009, here in Las Vegas when they did their first live concerts in the same venue so I knew to expect a show that is a mix of video skits, comedy, spoken word and intoxicating music. The show was all that and more.
The night was opened with a performance by singer/songwriter, Carina Round and the audience fell in love with her. Her voice is laced with the angry emotion that inspired her songs. She looks like a 1940′s pinup model but that refined beauty is full of bad ass attitude, rocking her guitar and the microphone, drinking whiskey and baring her soul. I am a fan for life. Carina Round’s band included fellow Puscifer members, bassist Matt McJunkins and drummer Jeff Friedl, together with guitarist Sam Stewart and keyboardist/backing vocalist Claire Acey
Puscifer took the stage after showing us a mockumentary featuring Maynard as characters “Major Douche” and “Billy D. Burger”. The mockumentary continued throughout the evening following the antics of Billy D. Burger and his wife Hildy while on tour with their punk rock/hillbilly review. Maynard took the stage alone and set up camp, complete with an airstream trailer. Carina Round appeared from the trailer and helped Maynard complete the set up which included a fire, lawn chairs, a flatbed trailer with Jeff Friedl’s drums and an old upright piano shell which housed Josh Eustis’ keyboard rig. The lineup was completed by Matt Mitchell on guitar and Matt McJunkin on bass.
I felt like we were all invited to Maynard’s backyard where he gathered up a group of friends to perform for us. Maynard said, “By day we hunt, gather, cultivate and build - by night we sing, dance, create around a central fire. Life is too short not to create with every breath you take.” With that, the music began. Highlights of the night for me were Toma, The Rapture, Man Overboard and The Undertaker. The music was mesmerizing, the humor was irreverent. Thanks for inviting us to your campsite Maynard, can’t wait to do it again.
