Trivium at the House of Blues in Chicago, IL

Tonight was the last night on the tour, opening for In Flames and Trivium. They left it all on the stage. With a sellout crowd and an early start time due to Chicago’s all-ages curfew laws, the fans were here early for opening bands, Kyng and local band, Veil of Maya who got the crowd amped up with their in-your-face style. Having played the first date on this tour in Milwaukee and now their end date in Chicago, gave them a chance to see how the Midwest represents for metal music.

Earlier in the day we got a chance to talk with Lead guitarist, Corey Beaulieu on the state of Metal, Summer Festivals, and soon to be released signature Jackson guitar.

Trivium is:
Matt Heafy – Lead vocals & guitar
Corey Beaulieu – lead guitar & backing vocals
Paolo Gregoletto – bass
Nick Augusto – drums

Opening their 50 minute set with the start of Capsizing the Sea before tearing right into In Waves, off their latest album of the same name. The crowd was ready and if you’ve never been to the HOB, the floors moves up and down and you can always tell how much a crowd is into by how much the floor moves. Tonight the floor became waves.

They continued with Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr and Black which showcases more of the cleaner vocals to go along with dirty vocals and screams, but this time the mosh pits and crowd surfing became intense; body after body kept coming to the point security had to call in more help. Playing another new song, Forsake Not the Dream, Departure, Heafy got off stage to play right against the barricades before coming back to play one of my favorites off the new album, Built to Fall.

Beaulieu is one of the best young guitar players out there, with his head moving in vicious circles as he goes up and down the fretboard of his signature Jackson, which he showed off when they played Like Light to the Flies. Gregoletto and Augusto gave the much needed heavy bass punch to keep your head banging. Gregoletto moved all over the stage, at each point stopping to show his respect for the fans. New drummer, Augusto is a beast on the drum kit.

The night ended too soon for the fans as they closed with Down from the Sky and Throes of Perdition; the crowd did not want it to end and kept calling out over and over, “Trivium!” You can catch them back on tour with Asking Alexandra in March, as well as the many big name USA and Europe rock festivals by checking out their website http://www.trivium.org/tourdates
