Summerfest presents Tito Rojas & La India
Every year Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI puts on a Latin night of music for the last day of the two week festival. This year, they brought two of the biggest stars in Salsa music to the Midwest.
After a week of scorching heat above 100 degrees, tonight was a perfect night, with a light breeze of the Lake; it felt like a warm, Caribbean night. While the temperature was cooled off, the heat was coming off the stage.
Up first was Tito Rojas, “El Gallo Salsero,” meaning, The Salsa Rooster who has played in some of the biggest salsa groups - Fania All Stars and Puerto Rican Power before going off as a solo artist. As he walked out you could see him feeling out the crowd and like a great salsa song that slowly builds up before exploding into a climax of music. He played for about an hour and halfway through, Rojas posed for the crowd in his Rooster pose to the cheers of the crowd as they waved their Puertorican flags. He combined the smoothness and suave ways of a man half his age as he sang, Senora De Madrugada. He enjoyed every moment as he walked off the stage as his 14 piece band played on.
As the stage changed over, the fans became anxious as they waited for the powerhouse vocals of La India. La India has been in music since the 80’s when she was with freestyle great TKA before moving on to Salsa music and she is known as “The Princess of Salsa” and for amazing vocals and emotional lyrics that touch your soul. Also known at times for being over the top, she came out to huge roar and thanked all the Latin men and women who are serving this country.
One of the great traits of Latin women is the confidence they have and La India pours out confidence and moves with such sensuality to go along with her voice. Playing her greatest hits like, Vivir Lo Nuestro, which she sang with her backup singer who did a great job filling in the role of Marc Anthony; that had the whole crowd dancing and moving to the rhythms.
She talked to the crowd about how the brothers and fathers are looking to protect their sisters and daughters from the bad men but it’s just not so easy and for the women to stand up and be powerful women as she sang, Ese Hombre. She played, Estupida off her last album, Unica and one of the highlights came when she sang, Mi Mayor Venganza - that had the whole crowd singing and the front row was just feeling it as the women threw their arms up with each word.
La India sang a few songs in tribute to the late, great Salsa Queen, Celia Cruz and showed why many feel La India is the next generation to inherit this crown.
She ended the night with her first hit, Mi Primera Rumba - her big hit she recorded with the man who discovered her, Eddie Palmieri. As the music faded into the night, La India was still there thanking her fans and telling them how much she wanted to stay to keep singing but was being told Summerfest was closing for the night.
Being half Cuban I felt revitalized listening to music that will always have a place in my heart and was much needed.

Summerfest presenta Tito Rojas y La India
Cada año, Summerfest en Milwaukee, WI presenta una noche de música Latina en el ultimo día de este festival de dos semanas. Este año, ellos trajeron dos de las estrellas mas grandes del mundo de la salsa al medio oriente.
Después de una semana de calor arriba de 100 grados, esta noche estaba perfecta, con una suave brisa del lago; se sentía como una rica noche Caribeña. Aunque la temperatura se estaba refrescando, mucho calor estaba saliendo del escenario.
Primero se presento a Tito Rojas, El Gallo Salsero, el cual ha cantado en unos de los grupos mas grandes de la salsa como La Fania All Stars y Puerto Rican Power antes de lanzarse solo como artista. Desde que salia al escenario, se le veía sintiendo la masa de gente y como una gran canción de salsa, que gradualmente se intensifica antes de explotar a un climax de música. El canto como por un a hora, y a mediados de la presentación, Rojas poso para la multitud de gente con su pose que lo hace quien es, El Gallo, mientras que los fans lo alababan y batían sus banderas Puertorriqueñas. El combino la suavidad y finura de un hombre de la mitad de su edad cuando canto, Señora de Madrugada. Cada momento fue tan divertido y el se fue caminando del escenario mientras su banda de 14 piezas seguía tocando.
Mientras el escenario cambiaba, los fans estaban ansiosos durante su espera por la eléctrica central, La India. La India ha estado en el mundo de la música desde los 80’s cuando estaba con el gran grupo de freestyle, TKA antes de lanzarse a la salsa y hacerse conocida como la Princesa de la Salsa y por sus vocales despampanantes y sus líricas emocionantes que te tocan el alma. También conocida por ser desbordante, ella salio al escenario al gran ruido de sus fans y le dio gracias a todos los hombres y mujeres Latinos que están sirviendo este país.
Unos de los grandes rasgos de las mujeres Latinas es la seguridad en si mismas y La India riega seguridad y se mueve con una sensualidad que va junto con su voz. Canto sus gran éxitos como Vivir Lo Nuestro, junto con su corista, al quien hizo un buen trabajo en llenar el rol de Marc Anthony; tenían a toda los fans bailando y moviendose al ritmo.
La India le hablo al la gente acerca de como los padres y hermanos siempre están buscando a proteger sus hijas y hermanas de los malos hombres pero eso no es tan fácil para ellos hacer, por eso las mujeres tienen que mantenersen firme y ser ponderosas mientras ella canto, Ese Hombre. Ella canto, Estúpida, desde su ultimo álbum, Única y uno de los puntos mas destacados de la noche fue cuando canto, Mi Mayor Venganza – esta tenia toda la multitud de gente cantando y la primera fila lo estaba sintiendo mientras que las mujeres estaban tirando sus brazos para arriba con cada palabra.
La India canto algunas canciones dándole tribute a la fallecida y gran Reina de la Salsa, Celia Cruz y demostró porque muchos sienten que La India es la próxima generación de heredar esa corona.
La noche termino con su primer éxito, Mi Primera Rumba – su gran éxito que ella grabo con el hombre que la descubrió, Eddie Palmieri. Mientras la música se desaparecía entre la noche, La India todavía estaba allí, dándole gracias a sus fans y diciéndoles cuanto ella quería seguir cantando pero le estaban diciendo que Summerfest estaba cerrando la noche.
Siendo mitad Cubano, me sentí revitalizado escuchando música que siempre va tener un lugar en mi Corazón y esto fue muy necesitado.
