The All Stars Tour presents… Obey The Brave
On Tuesday, August 2, Canadian metalcore band Obey the Brave took to the House of Blues Sunset stage as part of the All Stars Tour. With members originating from Montreal and Ottawa, the band is vocalist Alex Erian, guitarists John Campbell and Greg Wood, drummer Stevie Morotti, and bassist Miguel Lepage. With their debut album “Young Blood” slated to be released at the end of the month (Aug. 28), the band has already garnered quite a following not just in their native Canada, but also in the States. Much of the buzz stemmed from some of the members’ past bands. Erian was formerly of Despised Icon. Campbel and Lepage were fomerly of Blind Witness.
It would be a good long day (14 bands on this stop) in the main hall. . . The band’s growing popularity was evident by audience members’ “Obey The Brave!” chanting before the set. Considering that they were 2nd on the bill, fans came early and packed the floor. In fact, there were later acts that had a smaller draw. When it comes to the sound, their music seems to embody a lot of the same elements typical in what can be heard of hardcore bands. This case, it is not a bad thing at all. What makes them good and surprisingly refreshing among the day’s performances, is the down-to-Earth everyman simplicity to their sound and stage presence. It is a good mix of strong vocals, heavy bass, pounding drum beats, and hard-driven/melodic guitars. While rusty-3 years of high school French so many years ago was of no help, hearing a metal song in French hasn’t sounded this cool. No doubt about it: Obey The Brave will be a bigger blip on the radar screen by the time the tour is up.
The All Stars Tour also features headliner Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague, The Word Alive, Dance Gavin Dance, as well as the slew of other hard-charging acts.
