We were fortunate enough to get a chance to talk with teen hearthrob Cody Simpson just hours ago before his performance tonight at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario on the final stretch on his 3 month long Big Time Summer Tour with Big Time Rush. We chatted about the tour itself, his highly anticipated upcoming debut album (Oct. 2!), and his upcoming YouTube interactive movie through his record label, Finding Cody. Read it all below.
John Delaney: Alright so here I am with teen pop sensation, Cody Simpson, thanks for having me. I’m going to try to make this brief, but I need to ask you about 3 big things that are currently and going to be happening in your life.
We’re going to start off with the current tour you’re on now, and pretty close to wrapping up with Big Time Rush. How is that going so far?
Cody Simpson: It’s been good so far. Big Time Rush and I have been touring together in the US for about 2 months, so it’s been pretty chill. I get along really well them. The fans get really excited that we are on tour together and they get to see a great show between my set and theirs set too, it’s like a 2 ours of real cool entertainment, so it’s been fun so far, and it’s actually gone by really quickly. I’ve never been on a full 3 month tour that’s gone so quickly.
JD: What’s been your favorite part of the tour, and were there any stops that stuck out so far?
CS: I really enjoyed Montreal actually yesterday. I love accents and the whole french thing. I always enjoy going to Florida so that was fun too.
JD: And we know your fans, or Simpsonizers, are an incredible bunch and are extremely dedicated. Have they done anything extreme or crazy for you lately on tour?
CS: Actually I got a live turtle recently. I got asked in an interview once, what’s your favorite animal and I said a turtle. So next thing you know my fans are giving me real turtles. My managers sister, luckily enough, has a wildlife rescue facility. So we asked if she could take care of this turtle and we’d come visit it on tour. But we even told her, that ‘You know it’s going to like die on the bus?’ and she replied ‘I don’t care, just take it!’
JD: Right on, well onto the next topic: Paradise. We got our hands on a copy of Preview to Paradise a couple months back now and were astounded. What can we expect on the full debut album?
CS: Well I think Preview to Paradise is a really cool introduction to like the insiders view of the album, what it will sound like. If you’ve heard the preview, it kind of gives you a look into what you’re going to hear on the album. You’re going to hear a lot of real fun, chill, beach-y records on there, similar to that of ‘Got Me Good’. A lot of music like that, which I think you know is unique to me, it displays the lifestyle that I live and represent. I try to incorporate a lot of the whole australian vibe, I try to put out a lot of Australian vibe as I try to stay true to that, and where I grew up. You’ll hear a lot dance records on there too, like the single ‘Wish You Were Here’.
JD: Will there be anymore surprise guests that you can say, besides of course T Pain or Becky G?
CS: Umm, not this time around. I’m trying to keep it, on this album, really focused on what I have to offer. For a lot of people this is going to be the first thing they hear from me. I have an amazing fan base, but I feel this is going to be the first big project that a lot of people are going to hear, I just wanted to make a good impression and let people see what I have to offer. And then definitely in the future we will be collaborating with a lot more people.
JD: And although it may sound dreaded as you’ve been on tour the past months, should we be expecting a Paradise tour as well?
CS: Yeah, definitely. I’ll be touring Canada and the US beginning to mid next year, February to March, and then I’ll hopefully be going back to Australia again next year, and then all over the world, yeah.
JD: Finally our last topic, last night I watched the preview for Finding Cody on the Warner Sound Youtube page, that looks like a lot of fun, for both you and the fans, can you tell us a bit about it?
CS: So Finding Cody is a very cool interactive movie, but also like an adventure for my fans. To take the place of these 2 fans who are trying get backstage to meet me, and to get into the concert and stuff because they hear it on the radio. They’re grounded but they sneak out, and you got to make the decisions for them. It is possible to get the game over, or you could end up in the dressing room backstage with me. It’s a bunch cool outcomes and it’s cool that they cant take the journey themselves.
JD: Will the movie come out piece by piece or all at once together?
CS: It’s a piece by piece depending on what options you choose.
JD: Fans will be able to find and watch it all on the Warner Sound youtube page, correct?
CS: Correct!
JD: Right on, well is there anything you wish to plug or end off on?
CS: Well just my albums coming out pretty quick, that’s all I’m focused on right now, I just want to let everyone know to go check it out once it comes out we’ve been working real hard on it. It’s like my entire last two years have been leading up until October 2, so I definitely encourage everyone to go check it out.
JD: Perfect, well thank you very much Cody for your time, it’s been a pleasure once again!
