Live Nation presents… Gotye at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in Toronto, ON with special guests Chairlift on September 20, 2012.
Easily classified as a one-hit wonder, ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ group Gotye, took the stage at the Molson Canadian Amp this past Thursday headlining one of the final shows of the season there.
Starting off the evening with ‘The Only Way’, lead singer Wouter “Wally” De Backer appeared at the back of the stage. Staying back there the remainder of the song, Wouter and his one of a kind voice made his way up to the front during the next track, ‘What Do You Want’. Wally and his entire band moved from instrument to instrument (with the majority of them being different pieces of percussion) throughout the night, each taking turns on nearly them all.
The stage was a two-tiered stage, with a large projector screen backing it all, which displayed psychedelic images, many with a ‘pop-art’ type theme.
Although most of us know and love his hit single, not enough people know what else Gotye has to offer. With the entire band being based out of Australia, you can definitely feel an Australian vibe in their sound; lots of drums and percussion throughout.
Joking frequently throughout, Gotye would try and put a few words out there between every few tracks. Gotye ended their set with ‘Bronte, followed by ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ where Caroline Flack of the opening band, Chairlift, filled in for Kimbra, and finally Heart’s A Mess before leaving the stage temporarily to come back for a 3 song encore. The encore consisted of ‘Seven Hours With A Backseat Driver’, ‘I Feel Better’, and ending off the evening once and for all with ‘Learnalilgivinanlovin’.
With this being their second time in Toronto this year, and although the Molson Amp wasn’t near capacity for them, hopefully they will be back again soon, to an even fuller venue possibly?
