Korn with Asking Alexandria rocked The Pearl Theatre at The Palms in Las Vegas!

The Pearl hosted a night of metal mania with UK rockers Asking Alexandria and headliners Korn. Asking Alexandria made a nice loud energetic opening for the night and played a set featuring songs from their 2013 release From Death to Destiny, using every part of the big stage as they worked their craft. The band has made an impact in 2013 and has toured extensively, and will be playing into the fall on several different lineup tours.

Korn release their new cd The Paradigm Shift this month and this tour is taking it to the people, touring across the US before heading to Europe for the fall festival season. The Paradigm Shift is the band’s 11th release and the first release in a decade to feature former Korn guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welsh. The original lineup was back in full swing with their signature cage full of fist pumping fans and heads full of dreads flying for Vegas, lashing into 1994′s “Blind” to start the show. Korn touched on a couple of songs from the new cd, “Prey for Me” and “Love & Meth”, but mostly stuck to time honored standards from previous releases, like “Shoot and Ladders”, “Falling Away from Me”, “Here to Stay” and “Twist”. The 90 minute set also threw in the Floyd cover “Another Brick in the Wall” and the encore killed with “Got the Life” and final “Freak on a Leash”.

The new material from The Paradigm Shift is part classic numetal Korn, likely due in part to the return of Welsh and his signature style coming back into the creative fold. The tunes show a return to Head and guitarist Munky’s dual guitar attack and early era heavy Korn groove, especially on tracks like “Prey For Me” and Welsh’s “Love & Meth”. The single release “Never Never” with it’s heavy electronica doesn’t seem representative of the rest of the release, most of which goes back to the more old school Korn vibe with heavy drilling guitar and power fifes, bass lines pounding and drum bashing that makes your heart jump. Fans hoping for a complete return to the former Head days will still be wishing for more aggressive cuts, but Paradigm still has a nod to the dubtup that can’t seem to die. Paradigm doesn’t really break and new boundaries, but quintessential Korn fans will love the in-character sound indicative of the Korn brand.
